A controlled explosion on a North East beach was carried out on three bottles seized as part of an ongoing police investigation, it has been revealed.
Police said Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called out after it was suspected the bottles, kept at the Hartlepool Police Station, contained a suspected hazardous substance.
The bottles were taken to the Seaton Carew beach where they were destroyed in a controlled explosion.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 2pm on Saturday 20 April officers notified Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) of a suspected hazardous substance inside three bottles located at Hartlepool Police Station.

"The bottles had been seized as evidence as part of an ongoing investigation.
"While there was no requirement for the building to be evacuated, as a precaution, EOD attended the police station to collect the bottles and safely transported them to the beach at Seaton Carew where a controlled explosion took place."
